“The Mandala Center is a place to burrow into on a journey of self-discovery.  With beautiful facilities, gourmet meals, wonderful teachers, and other like-minded individuals, you are free to explore, participate, reflect, restore, and react to it all. The air is crisp and clean. There are no city lights or noise and you step away from the lodge into the Milky Way.  The Mandala Center, like most things worth experiencing, is beyond words.”

Camp Mitchell – Arkansas

August 24th, 2009

campmitchellCamp Mitchell is both an event and a facility. Camp Mitchell, the event, was organized as a children’s summer camp by then Bishop R. Bland Mitchell and was first held in the mid-1930s on Stout’s Point (the actual site of Petit Jean’s grave) and later at Mather Lodge. By 1946 Bishop Mitchel and the Episcopal Diocese of Arkansas had purchased the point and the acreage extending westward and Camp Mitchell, the facility, was established.

A popular site for retreats, conferences, reunions and weddings, this beautiful facility is home to such annual Episcopal events as the Arkansas Youth Event, Winterstar, Women’s Institute, Cursillio, Clergy Conference, Commission on Ministry meetings and Deacon’s Retreat Weekend as well as eight Summer Camp sessions. Camp Mitchell is also the long-time host to many non-Episcopal groups such as the Ecumenical Buddhist Society of Little Rock and the Arkansas Konference of Young People in A.A. (ARKYPAA) which recently held its 21st consecutive annual convention event here.

Episcopal camps nurture faith and friendships

August 24th, 2009

By Pat McCaughan, June 10, 2009[Episcopal Life]

It was the first full day at Camp Stevens at Julian, California, for 31 sixth graders, and every step along the hiking trail brought fresh discoveries.

Camille Furby, 12, a first-time camper, was part of a group receiving a mid-May mini-lesson on discerning dog prints from cat tracks. “I like it. I’m learning a lot,” said Furby, whose class curriculum included spending a week at the camp about 60 miles north of San Diego.

From merely taking time out to stop, be still and listen to meadow grasses shifting in the wind to contemplating varieties of energy, recognizing poison oak or settling in amid charred oak and pine trees for an impromptu fire safety lesson, “we want them to have this experience,” said Erin Brennan, a teacher at Furby’s school, All Hallows Academy.

campwashingtonStarted in 1917 by the Rev. Floyd Kenyon as a summer camp for boys, Camp Washington , a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut, has grown over the years to become a major residential summer camp for boys and girls. In 1990, work began on a vision to make the facility a year-round site serving the broader needs of the Christian community for retreats, training sessions and other church uses for all age groups.

In 1991, new construction and renovation of existing buildings provided a modern complex able to house and feed 175 persons. The 300 acres, laced with many trails, provide an attractive and quiet area for rest, reflection and environmental learning.
